Purpose
The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for leading and assisting in the development and implementation of process optimisation initiatives aimed at improving productivity, recovery, grade, and throughput in the process plant. The role also focuses on enhancing process efficiency in areas such as safety, quality, cost, and people development while mentoring and developing metallurgists and data analysts to ensure technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities
1. Process Optimisation and Technical Leadership:
• Lead and oversee the development of process metallurgists and data analysts to ensure a deep understanding of metallurgical processes.
• Guide the team in understanding the fundamental mechanisms controlling metallurgical processes and the role of automation and process control in achieving optimisation.
• Propose and direct investigations into technical and operational challenges, recommending and implementing improvements for process efficiency and product quality.
• Provide technical advice and solutions to the team and operations personnel regarding process challenges.
2. Data Monitoring and Analysis:
• Mentor metallurgists in analysing operational data, including plant reports, graphs, and trends, to provide actionable insights for operational improvement.
• Ensure that metallurgical and operational data are recorded accurately and consistently to support reliable decision-making and plant performance evaluation.
• Guide metallurgists in monitoring processing operations to ensure compliance with internal standards, quality assurance, and customer requirements.
3. Training and Mentorship:
• Train process metallurgists in troubleshooting techniques, problem-solving methods, and effective decision-making processes.
• Direct, motivate, and develop team members to ensure they contribute effectively to departmental production and optimisation targets.
• Assist in fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical development within the team.
4. Communication and Collaboration:
• Liaise and communicate with internal departments, sections, and vendors to ensure the availability of relevant and timely information for efficient plant performance.
• Coordinate with operations and technical teams to investigate metallurgical complaints, report findings, and implement corrective actions.
• Ensure regular communication between operations personnel and the technical team to achieve production goals.
5. Project Development and Implementation:
• Assist in the design, evaluation, and execution of process improvement projects, ensuring alignment with plant targets and budget.
• Provide technical advice regarding the feasibility of methods and products, offering solutions to improve plant efficiency.
• Contribute to the successful execution of projects through effective project management practices and stakeholder engagement.
6. Safety and Compliance:
• Ensure that all staff adhere to statutory and domestic safety regulations and practices to minimise injuries and protect company assets.
• Monitor and enforce compliance with process quality standards and internal procedures.
• Promote a culture of safety awareness and risk management within the team.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in metallurgy, mineral processing, or a related engineering discipline.
• Membership or eligibility for membership with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ)
• Computer literacy with proficiency in plant monitoring and project management systems.

Experience
• Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a concentrator or process plant environment.
• Proven experience in developing, leading, and implementing technical optimisation projects.
• Exposure to operational analysis and metallurgical troubleshooting within large-scale processing plants.
