JOB DETAILS:
Barrick Gold Corporation is seeking to employ an Exploration Geologist with the Central Africa Copperbelt Exploration Department in the Africa and Middle East Division. This role is based at Lumwana Mine in Zambia but is also regional in nature with the incumbent also provided with opportunities to work in various countries, and on various projects, depending on business requirements. Working in conjunction with the Senior Exploration Geologist the successful candidate is expected to participate in minesite and regional exploration activities in the Central African Copperbelt and elsewhere as required, ensuring the work is compliant with international regulations for mineral resource reporting.
Responsibilities
Contribute towards the technical expertise of an exploration programme and be able to undertake, to a professional level, all aspects of managing remote exploration camps, undertaking stream and soil sampling programs; geological and structural mapping; regional and local geological syntheses; and provide input into the compilation of exploration and mineral resource reports and presentations within the company.
• Preparation and presentation of technical reports
• Participate in reducing overall exploration costs through effective management, option analysis, minimizing delay times, control of consumables etc.
• Support the development of proposed exploration programs in order to support Capital applications and budgets.
• Ensure data capture is of rigorous quality control and assurance.
• Develop and take ownership of regional-, target-, and deposit-scale geological models as exploration progresses (lithology, structure, alteration, and mineralization).
• Participate in Brownfields Exploration as required including detailed core logging and reporting .
• Manage, advise, encourage and support geology technicians in their tasks
• That all drilling programs progress as planned are conducted in a safe manner with holes drilled and logged at planned cost. Progress and results are communicated to line management in timely fashion
• Provide technical leadership to the exploration team including review, development and maintenance of best practice technical exploration systems and protocols.
• In collaboration with the Exploration Manager ensure technical coaching for professional development purposes and the proactive mentorship of junior staff. Identify high performers and align for advancement
• Be proactive in approaching and building teamwork with Department Team Members
• Assist the Senior Geologist and Exploration Manager with all statutory and internal reporting requirements and all other stakeholders to be concise, effective & delivered on schedule
• Ensure Exploration Department members and associated contractors have Zero LTIs. Increased focus on reporting and investigation of high potential incidents
• Immediate stoppage of unsafe behaviors. Proactive in sending safety messages, safety alerts, interactions with teams and participating in safety meetings. FLRA conducted at all work places without fail
• Ensure working in corruption free environment
• Ensure Zero Reputational damaging incidents;
Minimum Requirements:
• A minimum bachelor’s degree in Geology or Earth Science; (Post-graduate degree in Mining or Exploration Geology would be an advantage)
• Membership of SEG or equivalent professional organisation.
• Knowledge of Sediment Hosted Copper systems and a minimum 2 years direct experience in Sediment Hosted Copper Exploration, preferably within the Central Africa Copperbelt.
• Prior experience in managing exploration data and drilling programs.
• Prior experience in the mapping and construction of geological maps and sections
• An ability to think across-scales and to integrate large, diverse, datasets.
• Experience in developing geological models at both deposit- and regional-belt scales.
• An excellent understanding of geological settings, deposit models, and ore-forming processes as it pertains to the latest concepts of Sediment Hosted Copper geological environments.
• A demonstrated commitment to safety, environment, and community.
• Solid and demonstrated hands-on experience in field work, exploration data & drilling programs.
• Shown to be self-motivated and possesses leadership qualities.
• Previous work experience with ArcGIS and other related software platforms would be an advantage.
• French language skills would be advantageous.
