JOB DETAILS:
An opportunity exists within Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), Zambia through the Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme (NTCP) for a well-organized, highly motivated, and independent person to join the team in Nsumbu as a Community Conservation Educator (CCE). NTCP has been in existence in Nsama Chiefdom since 2017, working closely with Government partners and the Nsama community to improve management of wildlife and other Natural Resources. This led to the development of a Conservation Education programme, with a view of increasing conservation knowledge in the surrounding community. The program called SUFINA (Sungeni Ifilengwa Na Lesa) was rolled out in 2021 targeting primary school learners and is currently working with five schools in the project area with a long-term plan of expansion.
Location: Nsumbu, Nsama District, Zambia
Reports to: Community Coordinator, NTCP
Working closely with: Conservation Teachers and Headteachers.

Purpose of the Job
Deliver an effective conservation-oriented education programme in schools around the project areas, linking conservation principles to livelihoods and behaviors, whilst ensuring a participatory approach in the planning, organization, and decision-making processes with Conservation teachers and headteachers, focusing on young learners in the target schools with a view of imparting them with necessary knowledge that will lead to long term positive attitudes towards conservation.

Key Responsibilities
The CCE will work closely with the Community Coordinator (CC) to support the activities of the Conservation Education Programme, working to improve conservation awareness and increasing access to conservation knowledge, in collaboration with Conservation teachers (CTs)and Head teachers. This will be done through the following activities:
1. Conservation education lessons and school activities
• Support the CTs in delivering a tailor-made conservation curriculum to learners in the target schools;
• Act as liaison between NTCP and the school administrations;
• Work with CC to conduct workshops and cluster meetings to review program needs;
• Facilitate the printing and distribution of learning materials in the schools;
• Ensure that teaching and learning aids are made available to the schools when needed;
• Work with the CC to conduct school related activities under the program as agreed with the CTs such as school tours and school showcases;
• Anticipate environmental issues requiring education in the community and create lessons plans in consultation with the CC.
2. Community Outreach Programme/Activities in the Community
• Support the CC to coordinate Community Conservation awareness events;
• Work with stakeholders such as DNPW, Fisheries and Forestry where needed to facilitate community outreach programs;
• Engage with additional schools for the creation of Conservation Clubs and support the development of their Conservation Actions, School Projects and Conservation Codes;
• Participate in other community conservation programs by other clubs, NGOs and Government departments, where need arises.
3. Monitoring and evaluation
• Carry out surveys within the community in the project area to review the impact of program on the community; Gather, analyze, and report data on progress of the program;
• Take note of program challenges, lessons learnt and participate in proposing actions for better program development;
• Collect and record information (pre and post activities) from learners and teachers;
• Participate in reviewing and updating the programme curriculum annually;
• Conduct monitoring of SUFINA lessons to ensure CTs meet their targets;
• Maintain a portfolio of photos of SUFINA program activities.
4. General
• Adherence to workplans, timetables and budgets;
• Adherence to the organization’s financial management policy and procedures for transparent use of funds;
• Ensure proper utilization of project assets and equipment in your custody;
• Liase with co-operating and implementing partners such as DNPW, Fisheries, Forestry and District Education Board Secretary (DEBs);
• Submit activity and monthly reports, and any other reports as and when need arises;
• Perform any other duties assigned to you.

Capabilities, Competencies and Experience needed for the job
The CCE should be a goal-oriented, highly motivated qualified individual with relevant work experience. S/He should be willing to work with minimum supervision with majority of the work being field based. Should be willing to work with different individuals from community level to Government partners, cultivating and maintaining relationships for the success of the program. Should be able to design and implement workable programs and contribute to the expansion of the program with new ideas. The following criteria will be used in shortlisting candidates:

Minimum Qualifications
• A Degree in Education, Sociology, Community Development, Natural Resources Management or any related program;
• Knowledge of the Zambian Education system;
• Minimum 2 years work experience in a relevant field; experience working in a rural setup will be an added advantage;
• Good written and spoken communication skills;
• Strong facilitation and presentation skills;
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
• Must be able to communicate in Bemba or Tabwa.
Preferred knowledge, skills & experience
• Knowledge of CBNRM, principles of good governance, and general wildlife and natural resources management practices will be an added advantage;
• Must have experience driving a motorbike and manual vehicle.

• Willingness to travel and work flexible hours;
• Willingness to work in a rural set up, to listen to, and work with rural communities;
• Ability to work under stress during peak workload periods;
• Willingness to spend occasional nights in rural villages to foster community partnership;
• Willingness to ride a motorbike in rural areas.

A competitive salary with benefits on an annual contract basis will be negotiated.
