PATH’s Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) team advances access to innovative health products and services that are responsive to user preferences and needs. We broaden contraceptive choice by supporting country-led introduction and scale-up of groundbreaking new options such as DMPA-SC, the first widely available contraceptive injectable designed as a self-care product. Self-care enables people to take charge of their own health. PATH’s SRH team is globally dispersed and embedded within PATH’s Primary Health Care (PHC) program.
PATH is seeking a qualified Deputy Director (DD) to support the anticipated next phase of the DMPA-SC Access Collaborative (AC) project. The AC is a multi-country coordination and TA effort that aims to ensure the sustainable availability of DMPA-SC, including self-injection, as part of an expanded range of contraceptive methods delivered through informed choice programming. DMPA-SC offers a safe and effective injectable contraceptive that clients can, once trained, inject themselves if they choose. At the core of the AC’s mission is the belief that, when women and adolescents have access to a variety of contraceptives, including those they can manage themselves, they are more likely to find and consistently use a method that meets their needs and ultimately realize their reproductive intentions
The Deputy Director will support the Project Director (PD) in daily management of project activities and staff to achieve project milestones and targets. They will coordinate closely with PATH and partner staff, including the PD, AC consortium leadership team, Country Coordinators in Africa and Asia, finance lead, workstream leads, and others to ensure that project activities are implemented efficiently and in alignment with work plans and budgets. In addition, the Deputy Director will provide SRH technical leadership.
Please note this position is contingent upon award to PATH and approval from the donor. Zambia, Mozambique, Nepal, Uganda, or Kenya nationals are encouraged to apply.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Project management (60%)
1. Collaborate with the PD to plan, lead, and coordinate the multi-partner, multi-country (approx. 10-14 countries) project team to ensure activities are accomplished on time and within budget.
2. Manage and oversee the development and implementation of annual project work plans, coordinating closely with the Project Administrator to ensure activities and budgets align. Conduct semi-annual project reviews.
3. Ensure timely and complete submission to donors of all deliverables, performance and financial reports, and responses to donor requests.
4. Collaborate with the PD, Consortium leadership team, and Country Coordinators to ensure successful country operations from start up to close out, including overseeing change management and ensuring successful implementation of project management approaches.
5. Establish and maintain strong working relationships with sub-awardees and non-funded resource partners in coordination with the PD, including serving as the primary focal point in managing and reviewing sub-awardee deliverables.
6. Participate in all workstream work planning discussions, identifying implementation bottlenecks, and subsequently working with relevant project staff, partners, and other stakeholders to develop solutions.
7. Similarly, work with project staff and partners to identify, document, and disseminate best practices, success stories, and lessons learned.
8. Support the PD in cross-project collaboration in strategic areas.
9. Lead one global workstream across the project (either technical assistance, or donor and partner collaboration), with a multi-organization team, facilitate staff meetings, serve as acting PD when needed.
10. Engage with project donors on a routine basis to report on recent activities, on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
11. Convene regular coordination meetings (e.g., DMPA-SC Operations Group, data review meeting, project team meetings).
12. Support relevant business development opportunities, including participation in capture planning, project design, and proposal development.
Technical advisor and technical assistance coordination (30%)
1. Serve as the project’s focal point and subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas: new contraceptive product introduction, DMPA-SC, or private sector engagement.
2. Provide thought partnership and technical advice across the project, including contributing to global and country work planning and reporting.
3. Provide technical advice to country teams and partners seeking technical assistance on private sector engagement, including topics such as task-sharing, social marketing, overbranding, supply chain management, and consumer demand creation.
4. Design and execute relevant analyses, reports, and global resources on behalf of the project.
5. Represent the project in relevant external working groups, communities of practice, or conferences (e.g., International Conference on Family Planning).
6. Serve as key project representative within the global sexual and reproductive health community, including attending select meetings or events as needed and developing presentations and talking points for other global staff representing PATH.
7. Contribute technical expertise related to private sector engagement in family planning.
Staff management (10%)
1. Supervise select team members in different locations, monitor their performance, and lead professional development efforts including coaching and career support.
2. Oversee dotted line management of 3-4 sub awardee leads.
Required Experience
1. Master’s degree in public health, public policy, or related field plus a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in global sexual and reproductive health (SRH), or a bachelor’s degree in a related field plus a minimum of 13 years progressively responsible professional experience in global SRH.
2. 2-5 years of personnel management and/or supervisory experience
3. Technical expertise in sexual and reproductive health, new contraceptive product introduction, and private sector engagement approaches in family planning service delivery. Proven experience in technical leadership and strategy development, at least 4 years of technical assistance provision. Familiarity with FP supply and service delivery data.
4. Proven senior expertise in developing and implementing effective project consortia with partners, government entities, and donors. Demonstrated project management skill set, with experience using adaptive management principles.
5. Donor relationship management experience with a range of foundation and government donors
6. Exceptional ability to communicate complex issues in a concise, compelling, and easily understandable manner, orally and in writing.
7. Demonstrated leadership, management, coordination, teamwork, and planning skills, with proven ability to liaise effectively with and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including global, regional, national, local, public, and private partners. Strong experience in global health or development projects in low-resource settings.
8. Documented experience contributing to an inclusive environment and discussing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to team and overall, PATH priorities.
9. Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently and virtually, and to track timelines and deliverables with minimal guidance.
10. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multi-site, culturally diverse, team-based organizational structure. Experience managing and motivating virtual teams with members located in multiple countries and time zones.
11. Strong presentation skills.
12. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
13. Ability to interact professionally in French or Portuguese an advantage.
14. Clinical medical background an advantage.
15. Available to travel nationally and internationally up to 25%.
16. Hybrid work location available at 50%
