Role purpose
// The Field Testing Research Agronomist conducts field agronomy research protocols under the
direction of the Country Testing Operations Manager to support Bayer’s Maize Product Design
and Development.
// Responsible for a network of participatory managed breeding testing locations that contribute to Africa Breeding pipelines.
// Capture quality research data to give reliable data for downstream breeding decisions for product advancement and design.
// Additionally, the role is responsible for continuous improvement and strategic initiative projects
that transform the way row crop plant breeding research is conducted within the organization using new equipment technologies, data analytics, and testing design.

Key responsibilities and tasks
// Responsible for the design and coordination of a field-testing network representative of target
environments in the country’s maize producing regions.
// Responsible for the implementation of innovative technologies designed to enhance phenotyping, such as use of geospatial systems, advanced planting and harvesting equipment, automated data capture and software systems, climatic and soil sensor instrumentation, aerial imagery applications, and digital operational management.
// Take responsibility for data quality checking and achievement of overall team data quality
targets using organizational data reporting and visualization platforms.
// Lead one or more proof of concept (POC) projects and be an active member of other projects
relating to large global and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) company initiatives.
// Independently responsible for site selection, grower relationships, workflow planning and
execution, and recording of all field management practices relevant to cropping system analytics.
// Organize and execute day-to-day priorities associated with data collection at sites, alone or as a
leader of small teams.
// Plan, co-ordinate and execute work activities in collaboration with operations managers and
peers to enable optimal resource use across the entire South African Testing network.
// Assign work in area of responsibility to contract/temporary workers, lead process improvements in safety/compliance/plot quality, monitor and acquire field and equipment supplies.
// Provide on-site training and supervision of seasonal employees and junior staff on standard
operating procedures in area of responsibility.
// Take individual responsibility for the overall quality and relevance of phenotyping data by
ensuring optimal communications and relationships with Farmers, Market Development
Agronomists, and Sales Representatives in the region.
// Actively participate and drive adherence to all ESH initiatives in the region to continually grow a
strong safety culture within teams.
// Travel up to 50% of the time particularly during peak seasons, to ensure data delivery for key
product advancement deadlines and supervision of field activities.
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
// BSc in Agronomy, Crop Science, Breeding, or related fields with at least 3+ years relevant
experience or, MSc in relevant field with 1 year experience through previous employment, or
academic experience.
// Broad knowledge and experience with agricultural equipment and row crop production practices
and history of leveraging that knowledge in a research environment.
// Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative team-based environment.
// Capable of extracting, analyzing, and interpreting large data sets.
// Basic understanding and passion for emerging trends in agriculture.
// Strong competency with MS Office software products and statistical systems (desired) used in
scientific data analysis, with ability to quickly learn new software programs and tools.
// Demonstrated potential to develop people leadership skills.
// Experience with seed technology industry or plant breeding.
// Experience with operation of precision agriculture equipment, hardware, and software.
// Strong data competency and understanding of field experimentation and associated statistics
