About the role
• Union54 is a Y-Combinator backed fintech start-up operating in Africa with a geographically distributed team. We are seeking a seasoned Backend Engineer with expertise in Node, TypeScript, AWS, and PostgreSQL to join our dynamic team. If you have a passion for building scalable, reliable, and efficient backend systems and have some familiarity with React Native, Expo, and real-time applications, we want to hear from you!
• The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background by education or bootcamp and experience in the mobile ecosystem, ideally for a fintech start-up.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist in the design, development, and maintenance of our backend services using Node.js and TypeScript.
2. Engage with our database systems, primarily PostgreSQL, under guidance to ensure data integrity, performance, and security.
3. Support in deploying and managing applications on AWS, with a focus on learning scalability and performance best practices.
4. Collaborate with frontend teams, especially those using React Native and Expo, to ensure seamless integration.
5. Contribute to the implementation of real-time features and ensure low-latency responses for our applications under supervision.
6. Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code with mentorship.
7. Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and contribute to our technical architecture decisions with guidance.

Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
2. 1-3 years of backend development experience or relevant internship experience.
3. Foundational knowledge of Node.js, TypeScript, React, AWS, and PostgreSQL.
4. Exposure to or interest in designing and developing RESTful APIs.
5. Some familiarity with React Native, Expo, and real-time application development is a plus.
6. Basic understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design.
7. Eagerness to learn and adopt best practices in backend development and cloud-based deployments.
8. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment and communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders.
