JOB DETAILS:
Background Influenza surveillance among cases of influenzalike illness and severe acute respiratory illness (ILI/SARI), identified at selected sentinel health facilities in Zambia has been ongoing since 2008. The surveillance program is managed by the National Influenza Center (NIC) at the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) on behalf of the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) and the Ministry of Health (MOH). The system currently comprises ten sentinel sites located in four provinces and captures data from both children and adults, resident in densely populated urban settings as well as border towns with high tourism and cross-border trading activities. Information generated is fed into global surveillance systems
The program conducts sentinel surveillance for influenza and SARS-CoV-2 among out-patients with ILI and in-patients with SARI to detect pandemic influenza strains, surveil for circulating seasonal strains and detect/monitor SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. With the support of CDC, the current system is undergoing expansion to improve specimen collection, data quality/analytics, geographic coverage and diagnostic spectrum with the goal of establishing a pan-respiratory disease system for surveillance, early detection and response to respiratory disease with pandemic potential. Additional human resource will be required to support this multifaceted expansion
The Ministry of Health (MOH) with the support from the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) seeks to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced persons to be appointed to the underlisted positions:
Reports to : The Director-Tropical Diseases Research Centre Duty Station : Tropical Diseases Research Centre, Ndola
Specific Responsibilities
• Performs sample accessioning Carries out all lab assays as needed Maintains storage and inventory of lab supplies, reagents and consumables
• Monitors sample quality and storage and manages shipping of samples to the NIC Monitors laboratory performance indicators
• Manages laboratory data and sends feedback reports to relevant sentinel sites and lab results to the Program data manager Any other duty assigned by the PI
Qualifications & Experience
• Full Grade 12 School Certificate with minimum five O level credits including English and Mathematics
• Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or equivalent
• Minimum five (5) years of experience working years work experience in a public health laboratory Experience with laboratory quality control and quality assurance systems and implementation.
• Registered with the Health Professional Council of Zambia (HPCZ) with a valid practicing license Experience working with and on Donor funded projects is an added advantage

Level of Education: Bachelor Degree
