Job Summary :
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the role will be responsible for effectively and efficiently providing legal advice and services to SLIZ on all in-country matters that may have legal and contractual risks. The job-holder will assist SLIZ in anticipating, identifying, eliminating, minimising and managing legal risk issues by liaising with the business units and providing effective legal guidance to facilitate business strategy development, in the form of monitoring and compliance with internal policies and managing the impact of external factors affecting the business;
• Main Duties/ Responsibilities :
Support the business in long-term growth by providing pragmatic and effective legal advice to manage legal risk across the business and assist in the design and implementation of procedures.
• Responsibility over all regulatory aspects of the business.
• Support all business units and the Human Capital team by drafting and reviewing transaction documents, agreements and policies and ensuring that they comply with relevant statutory and/or legal requirements; and ensuring that vendor agreements contain sufficient protections for the company against default and/ or under performance.
• Ensure that all aspects of legal risk are identified covered and controlled in the implementation of new projects, systems, procedures, and products.
• Provide focused support to Individual Life, Corporate Business and BancAssurance in turning around and closing transactions to support the company’s strategy to grow market share in the targeted areas.
• Develop a litigation policy framework and manage litigation within the framework guidelines by attending to investigations and collection of evidence and other requirements for litigation work to ensure that risks are minimized and the legal rights of SLIZ are maximized.
• Act on behalf of SLIZ in disputes, court representation and other tribunals as necessary.
• Negotiate settlements for litigation cases, whilst ensuring that SLIZ’ interests are protected.
• Ensure that changes and developments in legislation, regulations, guidelines and practices affecting the markets in which Zambia operates are analyzed, evaluated and reported as required.
• Attend to identification, evaluation and appointment as well as manage relationship with external legal service providers and undertake annual reviews of the firms.
• Provide legal protection and risk management advice to management, especially on contract management and policy processes, and supervise the implementation of agreements to ensure compliance with relevant statutory provisions and case law.
• Tracking and storage of litigation documents and court process.
• Prepare financial requirements and annual budget for the unit.
Minimum qualifications and experience :
• Grade 12 (or equivalent)
• Degree in Law and MUST be an advocate (member of the bar).
• Post-graduate degree would be an added advantage.
• LAZ membership.
• 4-5 years relevant experience post admission to the Bar in a similar role, preferably with a multinational, financial, or Tech company with experience in commercial and employment litigation before Superior Courts of Zambia.
• Highly developed strategic business management and planning skills.
• Excellent judgement and analytical skills.
• In-depth understanding of corporate law and legal issues that affect organizations.
• Overall broad legal knowledge (litigations, employment and labour law)
