Expert consultation on facilitating educational workshops for school leadership on anti-discrimination strategies and the impact of discrimination during the implementation of the Join the Circus project.
Background
Circus Zambia was established in December 2015 and is a social circus. Through circus activities which include education and soft skills, we provide young people with holistic support to develop their bodies, minds and souls. We do this for young people to become change makers in their community, creating a movement of confident, knowledgeable and engaged youths. Circus Zambia started from the grass roots level, with circus artist from Chibolya and a Dutch development worker coming together to create a vision. Now we work with over 500 youth directly and reach over 3000 young people on an annual basis. We have toured Japan, the UK and the USA and have built a 200 seat-theatre and training hall in Kabulonga which was opened by Prince Harry in 2018.
Circus Zambia is currently embarking a project aimed at creating a discrimination free school environments for youths in Chibolya. The project aims at utilizing circus sports to address intersectional discrimination in 5 different schools of Lusaka, focusing on the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of participants. As part of this project Circus Zambia will work with students and teachers in the 5 selected schools for a period of 3 years.
The goal of this assignment is to assist Circus Zambia in collaborating with the leadership of five selected schools to align anti-discrimination efforts with school policies and ensure their implementation, supporting the project’s work with students and teachers in the selected school.
2. Scope of the Assignment
The assignment includes the following:
Conduct research on intersectional discrimination in schools, including existing policies addressing these issues and identifying the most pressing challenges in the school environment.
Facilitate a 4-day workshop with school leadership to gain their support and support systems and structures that can support successful facilitation of the larger project.
Conduct support and mentorship visits to schools to provide follow up and mentorship on a quarterly basis.
Conduct annual review & refresher process
3. Deliverables
Research report detailing findings
A detailed workshop agenda and facilitation plan, workshop materials (presentations, handouts and case studies)
A final workshop report, including key takeaways, participant reflections and recommendation.
Quarterly mentorship reports detailing progress at each school

5. Required Qualifications and Experience:
In-depth knowledge of hate and discrimination, including their impact in educational settings and strategies for prevention.
Experience in facilitating participatory workshops with educators and school leadership on anti-discrimination approaches.
Strong understanding of education policies, including national and school-level frameworks, and familiarity with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines on inclusion and anti-discrimination.
Ability to engage diverse audiences, including school administrators, teachers, and policymakers, while fostering a safe and constructive discussion environment.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex topics into practical strategies for schools.
6. Supervision & Reporting
Supervision will be provided by Reagan Mung’omba (Project Manager) and Charlotte Groen (Executive Director) of Circus Zambia. The consultant will be expected to report to Reagan Mung’omba the Project Manager and Charlotte Groen, Executive Director of Circus Zambia.
