Job Title: Humanitarian Coordinator (Fragile States) - ECA (1688)

Are you a humanitarian who likes to build local capacity for disaster responses? Have you worked with first responders such as the church, and been involved in building their capacity? Are you interested to look beyond the direct response and discover and address the root causes to conflicts, displacement and natural disasters?

You might well be who Tearfund is looking to fill this role.
Tearfund's East and Central Africa team is currently recruiting for an experienced humanitarian who is able to look beyond the first response, to join the team to build the effectiveness of Tearfund and partner staff in humanitarian response, address root causes, and who has a particular focus on fragile states, which is one of Tearfund's Corporate Priorities.
Building effective humanitarian response capacity

Your major focus will be working closely with our country teams to improve the humanitarian response capacity of our Tearfund's partners and staff . This will involve capacity assessments, and providing training and accompaniment to partners, especially those within fragile states.
Deployment to support responses

The role will involve supporting partner-led to the crisis, to undertake assessments, guide and advise partners, help develop project design, and support monitoring and reporting, developing preparedness and contingency plans.
Contributing to learning

You will make a valuable contribution to Tearfund's learning culture, participating in evaluations, coordinating and facilitating learning reviews, ensuring learning on humanitarian good practice is disseminated and applied especially within historic disasters and fragile states.
Addressing root causes and rolling out Tearfund's corporate priority

You will have a strong understanding of what creates fragility and ways to address this, including some experience with peace building and other root causes work, and will be a key player to roll out Tearfund's new corporate priority focus on Fragile States in the countries in the region.
Regional representation

Your role will also include representation to external networks and humanitarian funding (donor) sources, INGO/NGO coordination groups and providing support in developing partner consortiums.

You will be educated to degree-level or equivalent and have proven and substantive field-based experience in a disaster management, with a thorough understanding of relevant good practice codes and standards and relevant experience working on root causes in Fragile States. You will have strong creative capacity building and training skills, and have a proven track record in project cycle management, capacity building partner organisations, and successful proposal development.

You will be a strong team player, able to influence and bring others along with you in critical settings. You will be accustomed to working unsupervised and responding to tight deadlines.
Applicants require strong English language skills (written and spoken) with an additional preference for a working knowledge of the French language. All applicants must be committed to Tearfund's Christian beliefs.

All posts involve potential contact with children and the recruitment process will include specific checks related to safeguarding issues.

Please note: This role requires frequent travel of up to 20 weeks a year to the following countries: The Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Rwanda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Burundi. It is essential that the successful candidate will have the ability to travel to all 6 countries.

The successful candidate will need to have the right to live and work within one of the 6 countries in Tearfund's East and Central Africa region team (i.e.; The Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Rwanda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Burundi)
