JOB DETAILS:
Job Overview
The SADC Development Manager at The Wilderness Project (TWP) will play a pivotal role in fostering and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to advance ecological research and conservation efforts in Southern Africa. The primary focus will be on building collaborative partnerships with local communities, universities, governments, and NGOs within the Southern African Region. The SADC Development Manager will be instrumental in supporting the team’s science and storytelling efforts.

Responsibilities and Duties (not in order of priority)
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with local communities, universities, governments, NGOs, and other key stakeholders.
• Facilitate collaborative partnerships that support TWP’s conservation goals and research initiatives.
• Engage with key local authorities to ensure all research, access and other requisite permits are secured and maintained for conducting work.
• Proactively engage with all key stakeholders prior to, during and after expeditions to ensure engagement and where applicable participation.
• Develop a network of affiliated researchers, conservation managers and other interested stakeholders.
• Engage with stakeholders to promote the sustainable management of rivers in the Zambezi, Congo, and Nile River basins.
• Coordinate and lead meetings, workshops, and field visits to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
• Collaborate with TWP’s research and storytelling teams to ensure that scientific findings and conservation stories are effectively communicated to diverse audiences.
• Work with Fundraising Head to identify and pursue regional and local funding opportunities and partnerships to support TWP’s mission and projects.
• Monitor and evaluate the impact of partnerships and collaborations, providing regular reports to senior management.
• Represent TWP at local and regional conferences, forums, and other public events to enhance the organisation’s visibility and influence.
• Ensure compliance with local regulations and ethical standards in all partnership activities.
• Assist in the development of strategic plans and initiatives to advance TWP’s conservation objectives.

Required Qualifications and Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Conservation, Public Relations, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in relationship management, partnership development, or a related role within the conservation or relevant sector.
• Strong understanding of ecological research and conservation principles, particularly in the context of African watersheds and wetlands.
• Proven track record of successful stakeholder engagement and partnership building.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
• Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Experience working with local communities and understanding of cultural sensitivities and local governance structures in Africa.
• Proficiency in English; knowledge of local languages in the Zambezi, Congo and Nile River basins is an asset.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically and creatively.
• Passion for environmental conservation and commitment to TWP’s mission and values.
• Willingness to travel frequently within Africa, including remote and challenging locations.
