ABOUT WWF ZAMBIA

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an independent conservation organization, with over 30 million followers and a global network active in nearly 100 countries. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature by conserving the world’s biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.

The Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative is a 2 years 7 months’ project. International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is a direct donor and Global Affairs Canada is the primary donor of the project. The project goal is to increased resilience of people – women, men and gender-diverse people to current and future climate change in selected biodiversity-rich ecosystems of the Global South.

Climate change has affected the amount of rainfall received in the KAZA landscape. Droughts and prolonged dry spells have accelerated degradation of riverine areas in the landscapes. The low rainfall received in the area is not sufficient to recharge the underground streams and aquifers due to increased surface water runoff in the degraded parts of the landscapes.  To address the problem of degradation and reduce surface runoff, CAPA interventions will focus on increasing tree and vegetation cover in the landscape. This is likely to improve water infiltration and percolation into the soil, and help create microenvironments within the landscape that will reduce both heat stress and evapotranspiration rates. The expectation is that the action will not only strengthen the resilience of the ecosystem to the impacts of the current and future climate impacts, but that of the people living in and around these target landscapes as well.
