JOB DETAILS:
The role of the Wildlife Coordinator within the Conservancy Management Unit of Simalaha Community Conservancy (SCC) is multifaceted, involving aspects of leadership, counter-poaching, human wildlife conflict response and community engagement. His/her core responsibility and objectives will be to essentially conserve, preserve and protect the natural resources and wildlife assets in alignment with and support to the SCC in achieving the successful implementation of SCC Strategic Business Plan.
Reporting to the Conservancy Manager, the person appointed to this fixed-term contract will:
• Strengthen law enforcement operations by developing and implementing an updated law enforcement and anti-poaching strategy and concept of operations
• Oversee the effective implementation of an operations control room and develop a movement and access control strategy for the SCC area to counter any security risks
• Help establish, equip and train a dedicated human wildlife conflict (HWC) response team, provide mentorship and monitoring and ensure regular detailed reporting of all HWC events
• Lead the Wildlife Department in the implementation of the SMART/Earth Ranger Park Project and supervise the wildlife department staff engaged in this project.
• Monitor the effective and safe utilisation of wildlife section assets
• Manage the community scouts by ensuring that satisfactory motivation, discipline and standards are maintained Implement the performance monitoring system for community scouts an undertake annual performance appraisals of the community rangers
• Report to the operations manager on all matters pertaining to the wildlife management component and provide detailed weekly and monthly reports on the community scouts patrols and detailed information on the wildlife movements, numbers, distribution, etc.
• Budget administration.
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
• Degree in Wildlife Management or Advanced Certificate in the Conservation field
• At least 12 years’ work experience in implementing wildlife management activities
• Experience in working with office systems
• A demonstrated commitment to enhancing team culture and working environment
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
