Undikumbukire Project (UP) Zambia is a charitable human rights organisation supporting vulnerable children in conflict with the law with free legal representation, social services and advocacy for justice system transformation.

Our team of qualified and experienced experts including lawyers, psychologists, and social workers have devised highly effective interventions spanning legal aid, social support, and advocacy to provide children the support and services they need and are entitled to whilst detained. In order to bring long term change to the legal and prison system in favour of children in line with their fundamental human rights, we advocate for enhanced policies, conditions, and legal frameworks.

We currently have the following internship positions available to be filled:

Purpose of Job

i) To support the UP Zambia team to provide legal and social support services to UP Zambia clients, and to participate in advocacy and sensitization activities promoting a restorative justice system in Zambia.

ii) To assist in providing support services to UP Zambia staff

1.0 Job Title:                    Legal Intern – Migration (1)

Location:                    UP Zambia Office, Lusaka

Duration:                    7 months

Duties

  • Conduct research on legal issues related to human trafficking, including case law, statutes, and regulations.
  • Assist in drafting legal documents, including motions, briefs, and correspondence.
  • Organize and maintain legal files, evidence, and case materials.
  • Support the legal team in managing case files and tracking case progress.
  • Prepare and file legal documents with courts and administrative agencies.
  • Coordinate with clients, experts, and other stakeholders to gather information and documents.
  • Schedule meetings, hearings, and appointments for the legal team.
  • Manage and prioritize a high volume of tasks and deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate records and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Provide empathetic and respectful support to survivors and clients, ensuring their needs are met.
  • Assist in preparing clients for legal proceedings and interviews.
  • Facilitate communication between clients and the legal team.
  • Assist with the coordination of project activities, including outreach, training, and awareness events.
  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders to support project goals.

2.0 Job Title: Legal Intern – Child Justice (2)

LocationUP Zambia Office, Lusaka

Duration:                    6 months

Duties

  • Attending court sessions to follow up with and provide legal information to clients prior to their court appearances as needed.
  • Visit UP Zambia legal desk to speak and offer advice to clients detained in prison.
  • Providing legal information to clients assigned to you by your supervisor.
  • Prepare case files and track the progress of cases assigned to you.
  • Assisting with parent tracing.
  • Engaging with defense witnesses and other case-related tasks.
  • Conducting research on areas of law which are relevant to the cases you are working on.
  • Assisting in drafting legal documents and ensuring that all case information is properly entered into the physical file and online case management system.
  • Inform your supervisor of all pending court dates in cases assigned to you.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports.

3.0 Job Title: Social Support Intern – Child Justice (1)

Location: UP Zambia Office, Lusaka

Duration:                    6 months

Under the supervision of mental health professionals in the Social Support team, the intern will provide psychological services to children and youth in conflict or contact with the law and those at risk of being in conflict with the law. This position offers hands-on experience in conducting assessments, providing therapy, and participating in multidisciplinary case planning, with a strong emphasis on trauma-informed and culturally competent care.

Duties

  • Conduct psychological assessments (e.g., cognitive, behavioural, emotional) and assist in report writing under supervision.
  • Provide individual and group therapy sessions for children in correctional facilities and children at risk of being in conflict with the law in communities.
  • Participate in case conferences and treatment planning with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., staff attorneys, Legal officers, social workers, psychosocial counsellors and education officers).
  • Participate in workshops and make presentations when assigned.
  • Maintain accurate client documentation and case notes in accordance with organisational policies and ethical standards.
  • Support crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts when needed.
  • Learn and apply evidence-based practices appropriate for children and youth with histories. of trauma, substance use, and/or behavioural disorders.
  • Attend training sessions and team meetings regularly.

Key Requirements & Attributes

  • Degree in Psychology (being currently enrolled in a graduate program is a plus).
  • Completion of foundational coursework in assessment, psychopathology, and clinical interventions.
  • Prior experience with adolescents or in a correctional/clinical setting is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with diverse populations.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.

4.0 Job Title:                    IT Intern (1)

Location:                    UP Zambia Office, Lusaka

Duration:                    6 months

Duties

  • System Support and Maintenance: Assist with troubleshooting, maintenance, and updates for our case management system, Helpline System, HR system, and Microsoft 365 suite.
  • Technical Assistance: Provide technical support to staff members, helping them resolve software and hardware issues related to organizational systems.
  • User Training and Support: Help onboard new users to internal systems, providing training and documentation as necessary to ensure smooth system adoption.
  • System Testing & Documentation: Assist in testing new features and updates to organizational systems, ensuring their functionality and reliability. Document processes, issues, and solutions for future reference.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to understand their IT needs and provide relevant technical solutions.
  • HR System Assistance: Help with the HR system by supporting staff queries related to HR-related functions such as leave applications, and other employee information systems.
