Job Purpose
The Head of Public Relations will spearhead the airline’s public relations strategies to enhance media presence and foster a positive image of the Airline both locally and globally. Take charge of managing corporate events, sponsorships, and community relations initiatives while ensuring consistent and effective communication with stakeholders. Be responsible for developing press releases, managing media relations, and curating the airline’s social media presence. Manage all facets of public relations for the company including protection and promotion of the brand, as well as constantly tracking and shaping the Airlines’ narrative in the region. Work closely with the CEO, Marketing Manager and key stakeholders to ensure that all public relations initiatives are integrated into the Airlines overall communication activities in the region.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and recommend comprehensive public relations policies, procedures, and communication plans that enhance the Airlines visibility and reputation with key audiences, including customers, employees, and the general public.
• Develops and implements an approved media strategy for the Airline
• Responsible for Communications (internal and external – websites, annual report, magazines, newsletters, etc), Media & Stakeholder Relations, Investor Relations, Corporate Branding and Reputation Management.
• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with relevant media houses and the press
• Oversee the creation and distribution of press releases and official statements to provide timely updates to local and international media on company news, developments, and performance.
• Regularly monitor local and global media to stay ahead of news, statements, and critiques that could affect the airline’s image, ensuring swift responses to protect the company’s reputation.
• Organize and manage press conferences and media engagements for the CEO and senior executives, ensuring successful interactions with the press
• Plan and execute high-profile corporate events, including receptions, cocktails, luncheons, celebrations, anniversaries, inaugural flights, exhibitions, and trade fairs, to support the airline’s branding and objectives.
• Identify and recommend strategic sponsorship opportunities and participation in exhibitions and trade fairs that align with the Airlines corporate goals
• Prepare and manage the budget for corporate events, ensuring cost-effective and impactful execution of all functions.
• Develop and manage the airline’s corporate social media strategy, ensuring timely updates and engaging content that reflects the airline’s values and strengthens its public presence.
• Propose regular content updates for the corporate website, ensuring alignment with public relations strategies and brand guidelines.
• Cultivate strong relationships with government agencies, diplomatic missions, and foreign airline representatives to foster goodwill and promote the Airline’s corporate image on both the local and international stages.
• Develop and maintain effective partnerships with exhibition organizers, trade fair hosts, and hotel operators to ensure successful event participation and favorable terms.
• Conduct and oversee public opinion surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of community relations programs and refine strategies as needed
• Actively protect and enhance the airline’s brand reputation by managing communication during crises or incidents and ensuring consistent, high-quality customer and stakeholder interactions.
• Collaborate with internal teams to ensure smooth interdepartmental communication and consistency in public messaging.
• Provide guidance and support to the Airlines domestic and international offices on media relations and public communication.
Required Skills and Competencies:
• Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently with internal and external stakeholders.
• Leadership & Management: Proven ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously with a strategic approach.
• Relationship Building: Strong ability to build and maintain professional relationships with media, government agencies, event organizers, and other key partners.
• Brand & Reputation Management: Experience in managing brand reputation and handling public relations crises effectively.
• Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage unexpected challenges with poise.
Primary Areas of Accountability:
Qualifications & Experience:
• Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
• A Master’s degree in any of the above fields will be a plus
• Must have a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in public relations, corporate communications, or media relations, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
• PR and Communications experience in the aviation or travel industry is highly preferred.
• Extensive experience managing and executing international PR strategies and campaigns or corporate communications.
• A proven track record of effective communications in large-scale projects ideally within the airline/ aviation/travel industry will be a plus
• A strong network of relevant media contacts in Africa, Europe and beyond
• Outstanding communication skills with demonstrated ability in delivering PR activities.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure in a highly charged working environment.
• Strong media management, event planning, and digital communication skills, including proficiency with social media platforms and web content management.
• Familiarity with regulatory requirements, sponsorship management, and handling crisis communication in a corporate setting.
• Must be a member of ZIPRC or ZIM
