JOB DETAILS:
BirdWatch Zambia seeks to hire an Education and Awareness Officer to join an exciting team of experts seeking to promote the conservation, study and general interest in birds and their habitats in Zambia. This position will contribute to the objectives of BirdWatch Zambia by ensuring its work is profiled and communicated. This role will ensure effective quality assurance and the overall integrity of the work with regards to education and awareness programme. In addition, it will also ensure the delivery of activities and other interventions wherever gaps on education programmes are identified, or issues arise.
Scope of Work
The overall objective of the role is to develop, take initiative for and ensure the promotion of environmental conservation and sustainable development through education, marketing and publicity. This is envisaged to be achieved through planning, fundraising and activity schedules in line with BWZ’s mandates.
Objective
The objective is to spearhead the running of all education and awareness activities within the BirdWatch Zambia’s mandates.
Key responsibilities
a) Research and develop a sound environmental education programme and resources for schools, adults, families, community groups or visitors to sites of special environmental interest to BirdWatch Zambia.
b) Promote environmental awareness programmes and resources for the target audience through leaflets, BWZ newsletters (School and membership), websites and social media.
c) Liaise with colleagues, teachers and community groups on the design and delivery of educational programmes.
d) Prepare and organise talks to targeted schools, communities, BWZ members and non-members on issues affecting conservation of key bird species and their habitats.
e) Work with BWZ members to organise and guided monthly bird walks for schools, communities, BWZ members and other key stakeholders.
f) Organise events and activities to raise awareness of the state of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in Zambia.
g) Through the School’s newsletter actively keep in contact with teachers and students.
h) Set up a school’s and student’s email address and WhatsApp numbers to send newsletters by email or phone and keep in touch with the young members
i) Regular social media posts detailing all school visits and all commemoration days
j) Liaise with the Programme Manager and spearhead management of internal and external communication in the best interest of BWZ.
k) Carry out risk assessments, particularly for outdoor activities to ensure awareness activities are undertaken in safe and inclusive environments.
l) Provide support to project leaders on various project activities as requested.
m) Perform other duties as assigned by the Programme Manager.

1) Have a broad knowledge and understanding of environmental issues at national and regional level.
2) Understand the socio-political context within which BirdWatch Zambia services are delivered.
3) Have experience of delivering similar results and bringing projects and tasks to a timely
completion.
4) Demonstrate knowledge and experience of delivering outcomes through careful operational planning, and the management and measurement of performance outcomes.
5) Be capable of high performance while respecting people and must maintain a consistent and effective level of personal performance under high demands and within given constraints.
6) Have good communication skills, interpersonal, presentation, organisational, report writing, with a proven ability to work to tight deadlines and a capacity to foster a positive working relationship with colleagues and external stakeholders.
7) Have a high degree of self-motivation, initiative and judgement.
8) Possess project/budget management skills and demonstrated experience in both organisational and grant / project funding.
Education and Experience
• The candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms have reached a standard of education sufficient to enable him/her to carry out the duties assigned to him/her satisfactorily. A bachelor’s degree qualification in a related Education, Environmental Education, Natural Resources Management, or related discipline would be highly desirable. Have at least 2 years’ satisfactory experience in environmental education or related discipline to include experience in environmental awareness. Possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills and have a proven
track record in management or organizing media events, environmental training and awareness.
• Duration
• The Agreement will cover a period of 1 year beginning April 2025 unless the Agreement is terminated in accordance with the provisions in the contract. This contract will be subject to renewal based on performance and availability of funding. Key working Relationship Position reports to Programme Manager
