Job Summary
As an expert in the management, conservation, and utilization of forest resources, you will be leading the provision of technical oversight (providing expert advice and guidance) on all forestry related activities such as forest management planning, forest law & forestry governance, fire management, silvicultural treatment/management of regenerating forests and sustainable harvesting of wood and non-wood forest products and ensure the implementation of best practices/approaches in forestry landscape restoration projects/programmes within WFZ.
Roles and responsibilities
• Conceptualize, plan, and guide the implementation of forestry-related activities across all WFZ projects, ensuring the integration of forestry landscape restoration (FLR) best practices through expert advice and collaboration with project/program managers.
• Strengthen community and joint forestry governance structures by building capacity in forest management planning and forest restoration.
• Identify key stakeholders in the forestry sector at the national and decentralised level and facilitate collaboration or partnership with projects.
• Promote alignment with WeForest Global forestry practices by collaborating on and contributing to the standardization of content and documentation, fostering consistency and best practices across all projects.
• Support the review of technical documentation, including Quarterly Technical Project Reports, TORs and forestry related project activity reports.
• Provide forestry expertise to the development of financing strategies for community and joint forest management governance structures and forest landscape protection by identifying and analysing the potential funding sources, including from public budgets allocation, corporate social responsibility initiatives, donor contributions funding, external funding through private sector investments and/or payment for ecosystem services, and compiling actionable and promote recommendations based on resulting from the analysis.
• Support the scaling and strategic planning of forest restoration and protection measures within WFZ
• Support in the scoping and development of new FLR projects in Zambia, collaborating closely with the Head of Project Development.
• Represent WFZ at national/international fora/networks related to forestry.
• Promote interdisciplinary collaboration by working with other professionals, such as ecologists, wildlife biologists, and land-use planners, to ensure the provision of advice and guidance of a holistic approach on forest management.
• Staying up-to-date with the latest research, technologies, and industry trends in forestry and natural resource management.
• Strengthen the capacity of projects teams (WFZ and partners) in sustainable forest management and practices.
• Support project MEL teams in the design and monitoring of forestry related indicators and protocols
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Education:
Minimum of a Master’s degree in Environment, Forestry, Natural Resources Management or a closely related field
Work experience and skills:
Essential:
• Minimum 5 years of experience in the forestry sector in Zambia
• Strong personal network in Zambia’s forestry sector particularly the Forestry Department
• Demonstrable experience in engaging with communities on forestry related activities
• Demonstrable experience in working with government representatives in the forestry sector, especially on decentralised level
• Demonstrable experience in forest management planning and implementation as well as forest landscape restoration approaches
• Strong understanding of government policies and priorities of the Forestry Sector
• Experience working in or engaging with the private sector
• Experience in working for an international organisation is an added advantage
• Knowledge of Forestry Cooperating Partner Landscape is an asset
• Knowledge of carbon project development and implementation is an added advantage.

• Self-motivated and proactive
• Practical experience working in a politically sensitive context such as forestry is an asset
• Strong analytical and skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially when collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders and providing technical oversight to a number of projects
• Fluency in English, with very good writing skills, presentation skills and excellent IT skills
• Must be a team player and is expected to work well in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
• All academic and professional certificates should be certified by the Zambia Qualification Authority (ZAQA)
