West Lunga Conservation Project
The West Lunga Conservation Project (WLCP) is a Zambian Registered Public Benefit Organisation working in the West Lunga Ecosystem in the north-western Province of Zambia. The mission of the organisation is to rehabilitate the ecological functions of the West Lunga Ecosystem and restore the complex of wildlife species that have become locally extinct or endangered, whilst preserving the integrity of the hydrological ecology and indigenous woodlands.
The organization works to achieve five main objectives:
1. Strengthen law enforcement
2. Develop sustainable natural resource management
3. Monitoring and research for effective management
4. Develop, procure and maintain critical infrastructure and equipment
5. Supportive governance and management with appropriate safeguards

Job Purpose:
The Field Officer will provide expert technical support to the project’s government partners in the execution of their responsibilities and to the project’s public and private collaborating partners and the forest-dependent communities and private market actors with which the project will engage. The position will ensure all project partners are equipped with the appropriate technical knowledge
in the field of natural resource management to achieve key project outputs and outcomes related to natural resource governance and management are achieved:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cultivate and develop partnerships with key stakeholders in the landscape, including communities and their governance bodies, government agencies, project implementing partners and private sector.
Work with and support government agencies (Department of Forestry the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, Department of Fisheries, Department of Agriculture) to support communities with:
• Management, oversight and coordination with CFMG’s and CRB
• Managing and coordinating Honorary Forest Officers with CFMGs
• Developing Forest Value Chains
• Managing procurement and stores
• Liaising with the Chiefs and Traditional leaders
• Developing Community engagement strategic plan
• Supporting the official gazetting of the CFMG’s
• Supporting the facilitation of the carbon feasibility plans
• Working with CFMGs on their application for management and user rights of their gazetted forests
• Supporting governance systems and frameworks for CFMGs
• Administrative support for CFMGs
Develop operational procedures for the HFOs in all the CFMGs
Assist the CFMGs to develop business plans, constitutions and management plans
Support the protection of the CFMAs
Ensure sound governance of the CFMGs and CRB
Implement and manage the WLCP livelihoods support programme
Manage the community beekeepers
Collect and upload relevant data onto the PAMs database
Conduct survey that includes but is not limited to Human Wildlife conflicts, settlement, Encroachment, wildlife ground counts and fish catch assessment.
Close collaboration with the WLCP community engagement team
Implement the West Lunga REDD+ project in Chizera
SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental, social, biodiversity, climate change, conservation and community based natural resource management
• Previous experience working with communities and livelihoods
• Agricultural and beekeeping knowledge
• Current motorcycle Licence
• Experience in conservation or natural resource management donor-funded project implementation
• Experience in partnership development and management with government partners, non-profit organisations, private sector and/or community groups
• Knowledge of community-based resource governance models and institutions
• Experience in negotiating and conflict resolution
• Proven communication skills in written, spoken and graphical means in English
• Competence in computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word)
• Ability to ride a motorbike and/or drive a vehicle (must have a valid driver’s license)
• Ability to capture data using a tablet or smart phone
• Strong report writing skills
• Strong diplomatic and relationship skills including working with multiple partners
• Ability to work independently and remotely whilst also being part of the WLCP field team
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• 2 – 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in the natural resource management and community conservation sectors in Zambia
• Knowledge of natural resource management in NW Province
• Knowledge of best practice in sustainable agriculture in Zambia
• Knowledge of community-based REDD+ project development
• Experience in resource stewardship e.g., managing and tracking budgets
• Experience in monitoring and evaluation of environmental projects
• Ability to communicate in the local languages spoken in NW Province
• Ability to work independently with strong self-motivation
