Job Description For Hospital Nurse Manager
The Nurse Manager’s key responsibility is to ensure that the patient experience is of the highest quality inspiring patient and public confidence. This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility and surveillance. The post holder will be expected to work in clinical research nurse management.
1.0 KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES – NURSE MANAGER
Performance management:
To manage the delivery of all nursing aspects of the agreed outputs for their area of responsibility as set out in the Policy handbook.
– Holding nurses to account for delivery of their objectives
– Ensuring effective action is taken where nursing performance is at risk of falling below expected levels and standards are not maintained.
– Ensuring that the Beit CURE’s Nursing priorities are implemented locally.
Risk & clinical governance:
-Ensure patients are cared for in a clean and safe environment taking remedial action if standards are not maintained.
-Ensure all nurses and clinical researchers are trained in Good Clinical Practice.
-Ensure all nurses understand and adhere to the research protocols they are working with.
-Ensure all nurses and researchers understand the specific adverse event reporting mechanisms for their studies.
-Be champion for driving the infection prevention and control agenda and challenging poor practice.
-Manage and respond to complaints and adverse incidents.
-Undertake root cause analysis and develop action plans, ensuring that this leads to change in practice.
-Establish and maintain effective communication with patients, relatives and staff to contribute to the active resolution of potentially complex situations, conflicts and issues.
-Lead on the implementation of patient safety strategies such as Standards Tool Kit, Saving Lives and Clinical Indicators.
-Share best practice and drive improvement in patient care through the Clinical Indicator meeting and Nurse Managers’ Forum.
-In conjunction with the Nurses in Charge, the Manager will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards within clinical teams.
Professional leadership and staff management:
-Be a visible leader who is accessible to patients, visitors and all staff under your supervision.
-The Nurse Manager is a Senior Management Position and calls for professional and clinical leadership.
-Take forward and develop the specialist contribution of nursing.
-Develop nurses in leadership and management.
-Ensure that nursing staff comply with Practicing policies and procedures as well as Beit Cure Policies.
-Represent Beit cure at local and Network forums promoting the mission of the Hospital.
Departmental & staff organization:
-Work in collaboration with the Management team on a daily basis. Monitor and action decisions in relation to requirements ensuring an appropriate nursing skill mix in relation to activity. Manage and report any risk issues to the Executive Director / Medical Director in a timely manner.
The Manager will:
-Review skill mix and deployment of staff within the area of responsibility, working closely with other Supervisors.
-Ensure nurse rostering meets demands and is cost effective and adheres to CURE guidelines.
-Oversee recruitment processes with the Human Resource Manager and ensure they are adhered to in a timely manner.
-Performance manage staff with direct responsibility for the continuous performance review/appraisal of Nurses.
-Oversee the process of continuous performance review within the allocated area of responsibility.
-Empower and enable staff to perform their roles effectively.
Strategy and service improvement:
-Collaborate with the Management Team in developing the service and business strategy.
-Participate in service improvement projects or development programmes that contribute to the modernization of patient services, providing both professional and clinical advice as necessary.
-Work in close partnership with Management to ensure all local, corporate and national initiatives and targets are met.
Identify and take forward the specific contributions nursing can make to the development of the hospital.
Financial management
-Act as an authorizing signatory for part- time nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants within agreed limits.
-Manage nursing resources on a day to day basis.
Report monthly Staffing and Patient positions to the Executive Director/ Medical Director.
Education and training:
-Undertake training needs analysis of Nursing team in conjunction with Senior Management.
-Support the development and implementation of education and training programs within area of responsibility for nurses.
-Be responsible for developing own skills and knowledge and contribute to the development of others.
-Provide advice to nurses relating to approved CURE projects.
-Work in collaboration with Management to monitor and regulate training and development of all staff to ensure:
-All nursing staff are appraised.
-All mandatory training is undertaken and recorded.
– Monitor and regulate annual and study leave to ensure consistency and equality.
– All staff are competent in acute care skills and have practicing licenses.
Professional standards and patient experience
-Promote excellent standards in the ward/departments through:
-Promotion of a nurturing environment for patients, relatives, visitors and staff through monitoring, measuring and actioning and evaluating.
-Advocating for patients and nurses at all times.
-Implementing a system for gaining patient feedback, responding to adverse outcomes
-Driving the privacy and dignity challenge.
Should be a lead in Quality and Patient Safety International.
-Experience in the use of electronic medical record.
Confidentiality / Data Protection / Freedom of Information
The Nurse Manager must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act. The Manager must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information.
Following the Freedom of Information Act, The Manager must apply the CURE procedure if they receive a written request for information.

Health and Safety
The Manager has a responsibility, under the Health and Safety at Work Act and subsequently published regulations, to ensure that the CURE health and safety policies and procedures are complied with to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and employees.
Infection Control
All post holders have a personal obligation to act to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in Infection Control and be compliant with all measures required by CURE to reduce HCAIs. Post holders must be familiar with the CURE Infection Control Policies, including those that apply to their duties, such as Hand Decontamination Policy, Personal Protective Equipment Policy, safe procedures for using aseptic techniques and safe disposal of sharps.
Risk Management
All post holders have a responsibility to report risks such as clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly. They are expected to be familiar with the CURE’s use of risk assessments to predict and control risk, as well as the incident reporting system for learning from mistakes and near misses in order to improve services. Post holders must also attend training identified by their manager, or stated by CURE to be mandatory.
Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
The Manager has a general responsibility for safeguarding vulnerable children in the course of their daily duties and for ensuring that they are aware of the specific duties relating to their role.
Smoking Policy
It is CURE policy to promote health. Smoking, therefore, is actively discouraged. It is illegal within CURE buildings and vehicles.

Person Specification
Qualifications
-First level registered Nurse.
-Broad clinical research experience relevant to the post.
-A proven track record of research/operational service management at a senior level in an acute hospital environment, including staff management, financial management and change management.
-A bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
-A Masters level qualification in nursing or a post graduate qualification is desirable.
Experience
-Demonstrate previous success in leading and delivering research, change and performance with and through clinical teams, by engaging them in the strategic direction and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively, ensuring a capability to deliver, monitoring performance and giving feedback;
-Proven ability to analyze complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them;
-Ability to think and plan strategically, tactically and creatively, and to prioritise work programs in the face of competing demands;
-A strong sense of personal and team accountability coupled with a clear understanding of the boundaries around delegated authority;
-Ability to collaborate constructively with internal and external partners to create the conditions for successful partnership working;
-A good understanding of the changing environment.
