JOB DETAILS:
The SBC Specialist will lead the design, adaptation, implementation, and evaluation of Social and Behavior Change (SBC) strategies to promote the uptake of HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services. The specialist will work closely with adolescents, young mothers, their partners, and community stakeholders across seven districts in Zambia. The role involves applying a culturally sensitive, equity-focused, and inclusive approach to foster health-seeking behaviors and build sustainable community engagement. The SBC Coordinator will report to the project lead.
Key Responsibilities:
SBC Strategy Development and Material Adaptation
• Review existing SBC materials to assess relevance, quality, and accessibility.
• Adapt the UNICEF Regional SBC Toolkit to meet the needs of adolescents and young mothers (AYMs) in Zambia, ensuring cultural and contextual appropriateness.
• Develop and implement evidence-based demand creation materials, including print, audiovisual, and digital formats, tailored to diverse audiences and accessible to persons with disabilities.
Community Engagement and Capacity Building
• Collaborate with government health departments, community leaders, and youth groups to ensure stakeholder buy-in and effective program implementation.
• Train healthcare workers, peer mentors, and community champions on delivering stigma-free, youth-friendly services.
• Facilitate participatory sessions with AYMs to co-design and validate SBC materials.
• Multi-Channel Communication and Dissemination
• Map and utilize preferred community communication platforms, including youth centers, healthcare waiting areas, and social media.
• Engage local influencers, peer educators, and community champions to promote SBC materials and messaging.
• Coordinate pre-testing and pilot phases to gather real-time feedback and ensure alignment with community needs.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Feedback
• Establish and oversee an SBC monitoring and evaluation framework to assess the reach, uptake, and effectiveness of materials.
• Conduct monthly field visits and feedback sessions with AYMs and stakeholders to ensure continuous improvement.
• Prepare detailed reports documenting progress, lessons learned, and success stories.
• Collaboration and Sustainability
• Partner with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health (MOH), National AIDS Council, and local organizations, to integrate SBC strategies into national frameworks.
• Promote program sustainability by embedding SBC practices within community structures and health systems.
• Ensure all interventions align with Zambia’s national health agenda and international goals for HIV prevention and SRHR.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Public Health, Behavioral Sciences, Mass Communication for Development, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience designing and implementing SBC or demand creation strategies in public health programs.
• Proven experience working on HIV prevention, SRHR, or maternal and child health programs.
• Familiarity with UNICEF’s SBC frameworks and tools is an advantage.
• Strong understanding of SBC theories, tools, and methodologies.
• Excellent training and facilitation skills with diverse stakeholders, including youth and community leaders.
• Proficiency in monitoring and evaluation tools, including data collection and analysis.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English; knowledge of local languages such as Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, or Lozi is highly desirable.
